e46 M Compact: 2002-?: BMW Unveils M Compact. BMW has declared war on the Subaru Impreza
with the stunning new 220bhp M version of its 3-series Compact. To be launched in 2003, the M Compact boasts
a 2.0-litre NG engine, offering an impressive 110bhp per litre. This is the first time BMW has offered a
four-cylinder M car in 11 years. With a smaller frame than the 3-series saloon, the rear-wheel drive
M Compact is expected to sprint from 0-60mph in under 7 seconds, with a top speed over 140mph.
And inside, there's more space than the current Compact, thanks to a better axle and suspension.
The range-topping Compact will cost around £25,000 when it goes on sale in two years.
Meanwhile, the standard Compact range, to be launched in summer 2001, will give a small glimpse
of the new M. Two engines will be available with the standard series, a 192bhp for the Compact 325ti
and a new 116bhp 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine for the 316ti. In late 2001, the two cars will be joined
by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder version and a 2.0-litre diesel version.
