CPAN is Unusable

Lightning talk 2002 June 27 by David W. Crawford. [previous | next]

A typical user experience with CPAN deters module use.

4. Users chooses the link Modules XML::RSS
which leads to a perl doc page with no links to
a download or an install, or no site-aware
(about, home, etc) navigation.

Imagine a user was referred to or found this page with a
search engine: where would this user go next ?

The old search.cpan.org, 2002 June.

Specific issues:

1. Links to this page should feature a label 'document' or
'POD file' or somesuch to indicate that they point to
documentation and not to the actual module.

2. This documentation page should have some navigation
links to its parent pages:

[fixed 2002 August]

3. This documentation page should have some navigation
links to cpan home, search.cpan home, etc
and should have a textentry box to enable a new search.

[fixed 2002 August]

4. Links to the full source (the actual .pm file) should be available
and appropriately labeled.

[fixed 2002 August]

POD docs for module, with news navigation header

Note: (Short shameful confession) Actually, the first time I looked
at a .pm file via the web, I suspected Activestate had snuck a
POD browser plugin into my web browser.
